Reflection on Quarter 2 Reading

set goalsbookshelf collage

It’s the end of another quarter and you know what that means! It’s time to reflect on all of the wonderful reading we did this nine weeks! With lots of snow days, I can’t wait to see how many awesome titles you devoured!

1. What was your quarter 2 reading goal? Did you meet it?

2. Why or why not?

3. What genre did you read a lot of this quarter? Did you try any new genres? What genres have you still not tried (consider reading one from a different genre this quarter)?

4.  How many pages did you read for quarter 2?

5. Compare your page total in #4 to the total number of pages you read for quarter 1. What do you notice?

6. What was your favorite book for quarter 2? Why did you like it?

7. What book did you dislike or not like as much as others? Why do you think that is?

8. What would you like your quarter 3 goal to be? (Challenge yourself but make it attainable, too).

A Note on Research

After 5 snow days and 2 days out with a stomach virus, I’ve made the decision to pause our research study until the computer lab schedule opens up so we can continue our study of online databases. Then we will finish our notes on our topics using our Research Grid (on Google Docs).
After that, we will begin drafting our research articles! Stay tuned!

Until then, we will be launching bookclubs! During bookclubs, students will be focusing on:

  • Why readers discuss books with other readers
  • What makes an interesting question
  • How authors use literary techniques to have an impact on readers
  • How we work together to maintain an interesting and productive discussion

We are finished going Out of Our Mind(s)!

Our first lengthy read-aloud in class has drawn to an end! We have been enjoying listening to Sharon Draper’s Out of my Mind since the first week of school. We have practiced active listening skills, answered comprehension and analysis questions, and learned about how authors make choices when writing their novels.

End of Book Questions that ALL students are expected to be able to answer by this point (homework if not finished in class):
1. Who was your favorite character? Why?
2. What are three themes of the the novel?
3. Give evidence to support each of the themes you wrote for #2. At least 3 pieces of supporting evidence.
4. What events had to happen in order to cause Penny’s accident? (cause/effect)
5. Write a letter to Melody telling her what you thought of her autobiography?

Block 3/6 is reading…

3.6

Lexie (left) & Breon (right)

Breon –  Diary of a Wimpy Kid Book #8 Hard Luck
“I’ve read all of the books in the series. My friend loaned me this copy and I think it’s really good. It’s really funny. I think it shows a lot of great detail. Greg is my favorite character because when I was 10 I could relate to him but now I can relate more to his brother Roderick. I read these books to my little sister so they’re good for all ages. She thinks it’s pretty cool to have me read to her.”

Lexie – The 11th Plague by Jeff Hirsch
“I picked this book up because I saw people reading this book and it’s good so far. When you read the first chapter, it hooks you. It has lots of action in it and it’s adventurous. People who like adventure/action books would like this. My favorite character is Jenny because she likes playing pranks and she’s smart. I’m about 3/4 of the way through the book. I find myself reading more frequently because I want to know what happens next and what the characters are doing. There’s suspense, too.”

Block 1/5 is reading…

1.5

Left to Right – Ava, Amanda, Latiksha

Ava – Matched by Ally Condie

“I just started it but I like it because they don’t make the beginning drag on like some books. This book jumps right to the point of the story which is being matched with the person that you’re going to stay with forever. I haven’t found out yet who Cassia is going to be matched with so I’m looking forward to reading on to find out! Once you get “matched” with your person, you get a microchip with that person’s history on it so you can learn about them because they’re from another country. The back of the story talks about a rebellion so my prediction is that Cassia is going to rebel against the person her society has matched her with. I would recommend this to someone who likes a love story but at the same time, likes reading about rebellion and fighting, too.”

Amanda – Insurgent by Veronica Roth

“I’m almost halfway through it. It’s a really good book. I would say it’s even better than the first book, Divergent. I can’t say too much about it because it would give too much away. But I can say that Divergent is about the human race being divided into different factions by the way they behave (tell the truth, if they’re violent, selfless, etc.). The main character is Tris and she’s mainly Abnegation which means she’s selfless and they’re all about other people…they can’t look in the mirror or speak about themselves. She takes an aptitude test to find out which faction she should go to. She faces a decision about where she should go…read more to find out!
My favorite book was The Gollywhopper Games until I read this. I would give it 12 out of 10 stars!”
NOTE: The movie for Divergent is coming out in March, 2014!

Latiksha – The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
“I’m almost done with it. I only have 6 pages left. It’s a REALLY good book. It’s really adventurous so if you like action then this is the book for you. So it’s about a boy who’s 12 years old. He’s trying to find the pyramids so he can find his personal legend. Along the way he finds the alchemist and he tells the boy his personal legend. While the young boy is in the Sahara he finds his love, Fatima. My favorite part is when he reaches the oasis and he’s living in a tent. A first-grade teacher from Cedar Lane recommended it to me this year.”

Block 4/8 is reading…

look what

Caroline – Fly on the Wall: How One Girl Saw Everything by E. Lockhart

“It helps readers realize that your life isn’t as bad as you think. It’s not an ordinary book. It’s from a girl’s perspective so I think girls would like to read it. It’s about a girl who turns into a fly…”

Aiden – The Mark of Athena, Book #3 in Heros of Olympus Series by Rick Riordan

“It’s a great story about finding who you are. I’ve read all of the Percy Jackson books but not the first two books of Heros of Olympus. It’s not that confusing because I know the characters but there are some new characters added. I would recommend reading the first two before the third. I think people who are reading addicts would like this point. It’s 573 pages. People who like reading from the perspectives of different characters–especially Percy Jackson series. If you liked that then the Heros of Olympus series is for you. A lot of my friends are reading this and they recommended it to me.”

Ford – Artemis Fowl The Atlantis Complex Book #7 – Kindle – Eoin Colfer

“It kinda helps you find yourself. If you don’t know who you are, you can find yourself. It also teaches you if you don’t keep a secret, it could be the end of the world. Child prodigies would be interested in a book like this because it’s about a child prodigy–but you don’t have to be a prodigy to understand. But there are words you may not know. It’s told from the point of view of a child prodigy.”

Chris – Babylon Rising –  Tim LaHaye

“It’s actually about explaining the end times from a Biblical point of view. It has adventure in it, too, because the main character is finding artifacts because he’s an archeologist. People who like adventure and want to know more about the Christian faith and their view of the end times would like this book.

Peter – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – Book #3 Harry Potter Series

“I like it because it’s a page turner so I read it at a quick pace. And it’s never boring. It has a good mystery/adventure storyline. This is my second time reading through the series. My first time was maybe back when I was 5 or 6 living in Wisconsin. My mom used to read them to me and my sister. When we got the fifth book we started reading them on our own. This time around it’s different reading them because I’m remembering stuff about the books that I haven’t remembered.”
